Hot Hotel: The Modern Honolulu

Overall: Beautiful hotel rooms, chic pools, helpful staff, would recommend.

Bear with me- these pictures were taken on my GoPro.

I was so grateful to be gifted a one night stay in an ocean-front room at The Modern Honolulu earlier this year. I had a nice but eventful stay. There was a problem with the room which led to my stay not being a completely typical one, but here was my experience…

When we arrived at the hotel to check in, the concierge greeted us with refreshing cilantro lemonade, which was especially lovely because it was a rainy, humid day. The folks at the desk were sweet and assured us we would be put in a great room. They weren’t wrong. Aside from the penthouse, we couldn’t have had a better room. It was just under the PH with this^ INSANE view.

The rooms are very white and bright, which I love! It makes me feel as if the rooms are extra clean. The shower and restroom area is right next to the bedroom, but you can close the shutters for a bit more privacy if needed. (Room tour in bottom video)

So the big hiccup of our stay was that the light fixture in the bathroom above the sink was leaking. I almost didn’t want to call and say anything because I knew they would either move us or need to be working in the room. BUUUT I didn’t want it to create a bigger problem, so I called the front desk right away.

About 30 mins after we called, the maintenance guys showed up.  It was a rainy weekend, so we stayed in the room- as we were planning to for the majority of the stay. The penthouse balcony is right above the room, so that was how the rain water was getting in.

Another 30 mins later, the maintenance workers went to grab some tools and told us that we would probably be moved. They said they could also easily stop the leak and leave the light fixture out if we wanted to stay.  Shortly after they left, we got a call from the front desk offering us a room on a much lower floor. Such a bummer! We asked if we could stay in our room, without the light, and they allowed it. The maintenance guys came back about 30 mins later, worked for a bit in the bathroom and then left. THEN room cleaners came by about 20 mins later to wipe up all of the water, which only took a few mins. The cleaners came by AGAIN maybe 30 mins after that to bring us water bottles and two Honolulu Cookie Co. cookies. Okkkaaayyy…but how can you be annoyed by people bringing you cookies? I couldn’t. I was just so grateful to be there and in such a gorgeous room that I wasn’t too bothered. We had a lot more guests than anticipated, but what can you do?

By then it was already time to head out to dinner. The weather cooperated and we saw a beautiful sunset before leaving.

We were set on a sushi place not too far, so we grabbed umbrellas and headed out. I assumed that we would have a bottle of wine waiting for us when we came back to the room (because I received an email asking if I prefer red or white), but that never came. Oh well! Honestly, the staff was so kind and helpful we didn’t mind all of the mishaps.

The next morning, we woke up to gorgeous weather. We decided to head down to the pool to enjoy the gorgeous morning. The pool at The Modern is hands down one of the best in Waikiki. There are two pools – the Sunrise Pool & Sunset Pool. The Sunrise Pool actually has underwater speakers. It is pretty cool to clearly hear music while you’re swimming! The Sunset Pool is for lounging and probably only a foot deep.

Their Sunset Pool is one level up from the Sunrise Pool, and only open to adults. THANK YOU.

I ordered this tea which had such cute presentation! We swam a bit, went up to the room to enjoy the balcony view, and then it was time to check out.

Any time I can get out of my house, even for short staycations, is so refreshing and energizing. Despite the extra company, we had a lovely stay. The hotel decor is very modern which feels so trendy and chic. It’s no surprise The Modern Honolulu is the new destination for the famous tourists. Yeah, I see you Nick Jonas. Heeeyyy.
